Functional Neurology
Have you heard of the term neuroplasticity? It is now widely accepted that the brain and nervous system are able to change and adapt. This concept of neuroplasticity is central to all our treatments.
Functional neurology is a field of neuroscience that creates practical solutions to retrain the brain. This is done by optimising the connections between the brain and the nervous system through a holistic and integrative approach. The goal is not simply to have an absence of symptoms and pathology, but to regain functional capacity. Functional neurology ensures that the nervous system is healthy and working optimally.
The Brain is the Key to Restoring Balance and Certainty
The brain is the command centre of the human body. It is a complex, dynamic organ that has a large capacity to adapt, change and heal. Our brain is formed and shaped by our life experiences – thought processes, emotional and sensory experiences, and movement patterns.
We use targeted brain-based therapies to improve neural signalling between the brain and the rest of the body. If neurons (brain cells) do not receive regular stimulation they may grow weak, will not form new connections (synapses) and will eventually diminish. Functional neurology seeks to strengthen neuronal connections by providing the stimuli to create the synaptic change, and thereby improve brain function. Once the area of suboptimal functioning has been identified, we determine what type, and how much stimulation would be required for your individual nervous system to create change and restore capacity and harmony in the pathway. We may also enlist the ‘neighbours’ to help out so the whole system starts to function better again.
Functional Neurological Rehabilitation (FNR)
FNR improves the overall wellbeing and quality of life of a patient by refining functional capacity and thus reducing symptoms. Specific areas of the musculoskeletal system are targeted through rehabilitation strategies, promoting change within the cells and their neighbours. There is a ‘nerve first’ focus on areas that need support and retraining. This leads to renewed connections between the brain and body, and the creation of new neurons and blood vessels. Whether we are focused on creating thinking and learning pathways, or if there is damage in the nervous system, it is possible to create new neurons and new pathways to enhance our wellbeing.
We aspire to empower people by incorporating their functional neurology therapy into their daily lives and activities. Doing specific movement patterns for a few minutes a day can help people to reach higher levels of independence and functional ability.
Vestibular Rehabilitation
The inner ear’s vestibular system is your neurological foundation. Without proper vestibular input, you cannot locate yourself in the world, and your neurological foundation crumbles. Vestibular dysfunction can be found lurking within virtually any neurological condition.
Vestibular therapy helps people with dizziness and balance problems restore function by helping them remap their concept of where they exist in the world. If you have been suffering from brain injuries, vertigo, balance problems, headaches, or neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders, vestibular rehabilitation may help you turn things around and help you heal.
Vestibular rehabilitation has helped people struggling with everything from dizziness to depression, from brain fog to balance problems, and from concussions to cognitive issues. Vestibular rehabilitation has helped people take back their health and get back to living the lives they love. Vestibular rehabilitation is a critical part of your neurorehabilitation program.
We Ask Curious Questions to Solve Complex Problems
